Eyelid twitching, sometimes called eyelid fasciculations, occurs unexpectedly in most people. These are temporary, harmless tremors, but they can be bothersome at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In reality, fasciculations are involuntary muscle contractions, in this case the orbicularis oculi muscle of the eyelid, the cause of which is unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The causes
There is usually no obvious cause for eyelid twitching. However, these spasms can be triggered by several factors, including:
Fatigue
The presence of cigarette smoke
Light (sunlight or artificial light if it is strong)
The wind
Coffee consumption
Stress
Alcohol consumption
Taking certain medications, such as those used to treat epilepsy or psychosis
The consumption of certain drugs
Dry eyes<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the vast majority of cases, eyelid twitching is benign and stops spontaneously after a few seconds or minutes. It is not associated with any disease. In extremely rare cases, if it persists, it can be a precursor symptom of certain illnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n
