Herpes is a highly contagious virus that remains in the body for life. There is one virus for oral herpes, called Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV1), and another for genital herpes (HSV2). Herpes can sometimes cause visible symptoms. For example, that infamous cold sore that bothers and worries you so much. Once introduced into the body, the virus infects the nerve cells in the affected area. It then lodges in the lymph node for a fairly long period. Depending on certain factors, such as stress, the virus will reactivate, multiply, and travel through the nerve fibers to the surface of the skin. It then creates a lesion: the cold sore.
Certain signs indicate the onset of a cold sore, which can last up to 10 days:
A sensation of localized heat;
Tingling sensation;
Itching.
