Maintaining good health – Maintaining a healthy lifestyle

Maintaining and achieving well-being can be achieved through good nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep. Health sciences, public health, and self-care strategies also play a major role in maintaining well-being. Maintaining and achieving good well-being is an ongoing process that includes changes in healthcare, health knowledge, health practices, health strategies, and interventions organized by private, public, governmental, and non-governmental organizations to promote good health.

The first step to maintaining/achieving good health is to have a better diet containing both plant-based and animal-based foods that provide the body's necessary nutrients. These nutrients provide energy and contribute to the body's functions, help build and strengthen bones, muscles, and tendons, and also regulate bodily processes. The food pyramid helps us understand the recommended daily intake for each group (carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fats and essential oils, and sugars). Eating good foods is important because it helps reduce the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer and helps maintain a healthy weight. The Mediterranean diet is important here because it contains bioactive nutrients that promote well-being.

Exercise helps improve the effectiveness of a diet, as well as overall well-being and fitness. It strengthens muscles and helps improve the cardiovascular system. Exercise can be classified into four different types: endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance. Endurance exercises help maintain good health because they raise the heart rate and burn fat. Examples of endurance exercises include brisk walking, jogging, running, hiking, cycling, swimming, skipping, rowing, and tennis.

Therefore, sleep is an important part of maintaining a healthy body. It helps our body rest, relax, and metabolize the energy stored in the food we eat. In children, sleep is crucial for growth and development. Lack of sleep can cause several chronic problems, including weight gain, colds, and certain types of cancer. Adults (18 years and older) should sleep at least 7 to 9 hours, while younger children (0 to 17 years) should sleep at least 9 to 17 hours a day for growth and development.

Furthermore, health sciences play a major role in improving well-being. There are two main approaches to health sciences. The first is the study and research of the body and well-being in order to understand human functioning and the application of this knowledge to improve well-being and prevent/cure diseases and other physical and mental problems.

The sciences develop in many subfields, including biology, biochemistry, physics, epidemiology, and medical sociology. Applied health sciences help to understand and improve the applications of health in areas such as health education, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, and public health. Organized interventions to improve well-being are based on principles and procedures aimed at enhancing well-being, using health sciences provided by experts in medicine, nursing, nutrition, pharmacy, social work, psychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and other health professions. Health professionals focus on individual well-being, while public health practitioners focus on communities and the population. Workplace health programs have also been developed to emphasize employee well-being, while school-based well-being services have been developed to improve children's well-being.
